As the year (and the first decade of this millennium) comes to a close it is interesting to review how the green movement is progressing.
So much of the news we receive on the environment, our health and the state of our planet is negative. It is easy to get demoralized and believe that no change is possible. But progress is being made. Let's look at a few examples.
Banning Plastic Bags
The fight to reduce the use of plastic bags in grocery and other retail outlets seems to be going well. People have adapted and now bring reusable bags with them when they go shopping. You rarely saw that two years ago. This simple lifestyle change keeps millions of plastic bags from being produced daily.
Eliminating Bottled Water
A similar trend can be seen with bottled water. At the beginning of this decade drinking bottled water was the thing to do. How many people drank tap water or used refillable bottles? Now, sales of bottled water are down, people are returning to tap water and our landfills are getting a much needed break.
Green Cars
What about energy efficient cars? Every major car manufacturer is offering or working on offering a line of hybrid or electric cars. Even though some technical challenges remain, the trend is in the right direction.
The Green Consumer
The consumer products area has also seen some successes. People are making the switch to greener products and companies have noticed. Product packaging is improving, finding less toxic cleaning products is easier and many personal care products are being produced with fewer harmful ingredients. Most large supermarkets now carry a selection of green products and offer a better selection of organic food as well.
Environmental Awareness
Public awareness of environmental issues is improving. Recycling is a common activity in most urban centers. Climate change and the search for alternate energy sources are discussed and debated more often. Even relatively obscure environmental issues like the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch or Peak Oil are getting noticed. The media has focused attention on these issues and people are recognizing that these serious environmental and lifestyle problems require our attention. Awareness of a problem is a necessary step to solving it.
Eco-Progess
Think about some of the changes you've made over the last few years. Whether large or small, they add up and do make a difference. Change is possible and change is happening. Let's recognize and celebrate the victories we can.
